Who can get a .au domain name
With Vikilinks, every .au name, including .com.au, .net.au and .org.au, needs an active ABN. To register a .au name with Vikilinks you need an active ABN, which we check before it is registered.
Our rule: an active ABN
To register a .au name with Vikilinks you need an active ABN, which we check before it is registered. The check on this page asks the Australian Business Register whether an ABN is active.
auDA also accepts some other proof, such as an ACN or an Australian trade mark. If that is you, contact us and we will help.
What auDA asks of everyone
auDA runs the .au namespace. Its Licensing Rules say every .au licence holder must have an Australian presence, such as being an Australian citizen or permanent resident, or a company, business or organisation registered in Australia. Each extension then adds its own conditions, set out below.
.au direct, like yourname.au
The name does not have to match your business name. An Australian presence is enough under the auDA rules (rule 2.4.3). With Vikilinks it still needs an active ABN.
.com.au and .net.au
For a commercial entity. Under rule 2.4.4 the name must match, or be an acronym of, your company, business, statutory or personal name, or exactly match your Australian trade mark, or match (or be a synonym of) a service, product, event, activity or premises you provide.
.org.au
For a not-for-profit entity. Under rule 2.4.6 the name must match or be an acronym of the organisation's name, match its Australian trade mark, or match or be a synonym of a service, program, event, activity, premises or occupation it provides, or match the name of a trust it administers.
