Meta tags shape your first impression in search.
Title tag
The blue headline in Google results. A confirmed ranking signal and the first thing searchers read. Get it right and you lift both rankings and clicks.
Meta description
The grey summary below the title. Not a ranking factor, but a persuasive description drives higher click-through rates and more traffic from the same position.
Open Graph tags
Control how your page looks when shared on Facebook and LinkedIn. Without them, social platforms guess, often pulling the wrong image or headline.
Twitter card
Sets the card format and image when your page is shared on X. The summary_large_image card gets significantly more engagement than a plain text link.
Meta tags, explained
Google typically displays up to around 580 pixels of a title tag, which works out to roughly 50 to 60 characters depending on the letters used. Wide characters like W and M take more space than narrow ones like i or l. Keep your most important keyword and brand name within that limit to avoid truncation in search results. If your title is cut short, Google may rewrite it entirely, which reduces your control over how the page appears.
Google caps meta descriptions at roughly 920 pixels wide on desktop, which corresponds to about 155 to 160 characters. On mobile the limit is slightly shorter. Aim for 140 to 155 characters to stay safe on both. The description does not directly influence rankings but it does influence click-through rate, so write it as a persuasive summary that includes your target keyword and a clear benefit or call to action.
Google rewrites titles when it thinks its version better describes the page for a given query, when the title is too long or too short, when it is stuffed with keywords, when it does not match the page content, or when it is a generic label like "Home" or "Untitled". To reduce rewrites, write a unique, descriptive title for every page, keep it within the pixel limit, include the page topic near the front, and avoid repeating the same phrase multiple times.
Yes, though their role has evolved. The title tag remains a confirmed ranking factor and one of the strongest on-page signals. The meta description is not a ranking factor but it shapes click-through rate, which affects how much traffic you get from a given ranking position. Open Graph and Twitter card tags control how your page looks when shared on social media, which indirectly drives traffic and brand credibility. Together, well-crafted meta tags improve both your search visibility and your share of attention in the results.
