Know what each UTM parameter does.
utm_source
Where the traffic comes from. Use the platform or publisher name: google, facebook, newsletter, linkedin.
utm_medium
The channel type. Standard values: cpc, email, social, organic, referral, display.
utm_campaign
Your campaign name. Keep it descriptive and consistent: summer-sale-2025, brand-awareness-q3.
utm_term
The paid keyword. Used in paid search to identify which keyword triggered the ad. Optional for other channels.
utm_content
Differentiates links within the same campaign. Useful for A/B testing: banner-a vs banner-b, or cta-hero vs cta-footer.
Best practice
Always use lowercase. Use hyphens not spaces. Be consistent across your team. Check GA4 Traffic Acquisition to verify data is flowing.
UTM tracking, explained
A UTM parameter is a short piece of text you append to a URL so that analytics platforms like GA4 can identify exactly where a visitor came from. The name comes from Urchin Tracking Module, the technology Google acquired to build Analytics. There are five standard parameters: utm_source (which site or platform sent the traffic), utm_medium (the channel type such as email or cpc), utm_campaign (the name of your campaign), utm_term (the keyword for paid search), and utm_content (used to distinguish between ads or links in the same campaign).
At a minimum, always set utm_source, utm_medium, and utm_campaign. These three are required for GA4 to classify the session as a campaign rather than as direct traffic. Add utm_term when you are running paid search ads so you can see which keywords drove conversions. Add utm_content when you are A/B testing two creatives or when a single email contains multiple links pointing to the same destination. utm_term and utm_content are optional for organic and social campaigns.
Yes. GA4 and Universal Analytics treat UTM values as case-sensitive strings, which means "Email" and "email" will appear as two separate sources in your reports, splitting your data. Always use lowercase letters for all UTM values. Use hyphens rather than spaces or underscores to separate words (for example, "google-ads" or "summer-sale-2025") so the values are readable in reports and consistent across your team.
In GA4, go to Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition. The default channel grouping view groups sessions by channel. To see raw UTM values, click the Session default channel group dimension and switch it to Session source, Session medium, or Session campaign. You can also create a custom exploration report in the Explore section and add utm_source, utm_medium, and utm_campaign as dimensions alongside conversions or revenue metrics to measure campaign ROI.
